7 Day Social Media Detox Challenge You Need To Try

A few decades ago (I can’t even say years because social media has been here for a while now!), a social media detox would have been unnecessary and pretty much irrelevant. Why? Because social media wasn’t a problem or even a thing back them. However, that’s not the case anymore. Social media is a huge part of our daily lives and we all know it. Can you imagine not having to rely on Instagram to share photos and connect with brands, celebrities, friends, and clients? How about WhatsApp and Facebook to message friends and family around the world? Or how about Twitter for the latest trending news? Although social media plays a huge role in our daily lives, it’s important to step away from it every once in a while. So, if you’ve never done a social media detox before, today I’ll be sharing a 7 day social media detox challenge that you have to try.

GOAL OF A SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX
While the thought of living life without having to rely on social media seems quite pleasant, we can’t deny that social media also has it’s perks. As a 90s baby I was able to briefly experience life without social media in the early 2000s. Even though I was only a kid then, I do remember how nice it was to be able to live life in the moment without having to post on social media, be on your phone 24/7, and deal with comparison on social media.
I’m sure there were social media platforms roaming around like MySpace and what not, but I was too young to be on them! So, social media didn’t exist for me at the moment. However, when I was around 10 years old, FaceBook started gaining popularity and slowly but surely the world of social media began to evolve right before my eyes. It only took for me to create my first Facebook account at the age of 10 and then I was on every popular social media network possible. Fast forward a few years later and I’m on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. And if I’m being completely honest with you, I absolutely love social media and would not want to go back to times where social media wasn’t a thing. Therefore, the goal of this challenge is not to eliminate social media from your life, but instead to control your use of it.
EFFECTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX CHALLENGE
Since the goal of this social media detox challenge is to control your use of social media, I have created a 7 day social media detox challenge to help you slowly detach from social media. While social media has it’s perks and benefits, we should not be controlled by it either. So, if you’re up for the challenge, I challenge you to try out this 7 day social media detox challenge!
7 Day Social Media Detox Challenge
DAY 1 – MONDAY
MORNING WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
Regardless of the time you wake up, do not use any kind of social media until after two hours of waking up. As tempting as it may be to pick up your phone first thing on Monday morning to scroll through various social media feeds, fight the urge.
Did you know that the way you start off your morning defines how the rest of your day will be? Today, not only will you start off your morning right, but you will start off the entire week right. Invest the time you would use on social media on yourself. Use the time you would normally spend on social media to have breakfast on time, go for a walk, read a book, listen to a podcast, get ready for the day, plan the week, etc.

DAY 2 – TUESDAY
HALF A DAY WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
Do not use any form of social media until 12:00 P.M
Believe it or not, Mondays and Tuesdays are the best days to be productive. Which is why today you will spend your entire morning away from social media. Just think of how much time becomes available to you now. Like I said earlier, the goal of this social media detox is not only designed to help you cut down your social media use, but to help you make the best use of your time when you are away from social media.

DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY
EAT ALL MEALS WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
Uh oh. Today you will force yourself to have breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and any snacks in between without using social media. Try to simply enjoy your meals today. Photographing your meals is off limits because then you will be tempted to post them on social media. Sometimes, we unintentionally focus more on capturing a moment rather than actually enjoying it. But don’t let that be the case today!
So, regardless of how great your dishes looks today and how much you want others to see what you’re eating…..try to enjoy it phone free. No scrolling through any feed or checking any messages. You can do this! 🙂
DAY 4 – THURSDAY
GO TO BED WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
No social media before bed. Don’t hate me. As the weekend approaches, the urge of using social media increases more. So, I had to make today’s challenge a little more challenging for us. Since the week is almost over, it’s easier to start slacking and using our phones more than usual.
Therefore, today’s challenge is to stay away from social media two hours prior to going to bed. I don’t know about you, but night time is my favorite time to use social media. I like using social media at night because it’s usually when I have some time to sit back and scroll through social media. Which is why today’s challenge is a little tricky. Even though restricting this particular time can be quite challenging, it is truly one of the best ways to prep for bed.
DAY 5 – FRIDAY
FULL DAY WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
The hardest day in the entire 7 day social media detox challenge. And on a Friday, too! 😉 Today’s challenge is to stay away from social media all day long. That’s right, no social media for the next 24 hours. Even though it may seem like I am punishing you, I’m really not. I promise. The previous challenges were meant to prepare you for today’s challenge. Although today’s challenge is pretty straight-forward, it is probably the hardest one of all because today you face an all day social media restriction. So that means no social media in the morning, afternoon, evening, or night.
The goal of today’s challenge is to give you a full day without social media so that you can use this time wisely. So, treat this Friday like you would a Monday (in terms of productivity) and hustle hustle hustle. Or if you want to use this day to take care of yourself, below are self-care ideas for you!

No matter what you do today, stay away from social media. I also suggest staying away from your phone for the most part so that you’re not tempted to go on social media! Hey, you’re so close to completing the challenge. Don’t give up now!
DAY 6 – SATURDAY
HALF A DAY WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
Um remember Tuesday’s challenge? Today’s challenge is similar but a little different. On Tuesday you weren’t allowed to be on social media until after 12P.M on Tuesday. But today, you will be able to use social media until 12P.M. So, whether you wake up early or late, once the clock hit’s 12P.M (in your time zone), you have to stay away from social media.
DAY 7 – SUNDAY
FIVE 15 SOCIAL MEDIA BREAKS
And after completing the 6 challenges above, you’re finally on the last day of this 7 day social media detox challenge. How exciting! After going mornings, nights, meals, half days, and even a full day without social media, today’s challenge will be a little more flexible. For today’s challenge, you will be given the liberty to pick up your phone for social media purposes 5 times and a total of 15 minutes to use in each of those times. So, it will be up to you to decide what time of the day you want to use your 5 social media passes.
SIDE NOTE: If you didn’t use up all 15 minutes during one of your 5 social media free passes, you will not be able to add the remaining minutes to your next use. You can only be on social media 15 minutes at a time.
The goal of today’s social media detox challenge is to test your self-control when given some liberty. Although, you have the freedom to choose when you will go on social media (5 times or less), you must still refrain yourself from using it more than the given time.

This is such a refreshing challenge idea. I don’t tend to use my phone during university lectures or meal times but I’m terrible for mindless morning and evening scrolling through social media! Definitely going to think about giving this a try. x

This is a great idea. It’s so easy to let social media take over our lives. We tend to constantly be on our phone and easily forget to pay attention to those in front of us. It’s good to learn to take a break from it sometimes. But, during your time on social media, you may want to check this out. I have nominated you for the Mystery Blogger Award. There is a link to your blog in the post. I think you are doing a great job and I love your advice and tips.
Thank you so much! I will be heading to your blog right now. I appreciate your love & support! xo
