Creating Alternative Morning Routines.

April 8, 2019
A woman following her morning routine

Whether it’d be because of school, work, traveling, an illness, or another reason, there is nothing worse than not being able to follow our routines as planned. Right? Personally, I hate having to miss my routine for more than two days because I feel like everything falls out of place when my routine is disrupted. However, it is impossible to follow one specific morning routine every single day because as we all know it, life happens. Which is why, it’s important to have alternative morning routines planned and ready for the days we can’t stick to our regular morning routine.

HOW TO CREATE ALTERNATIVE MORNING ROUTINES:

PREPARING FOR THE UNEXPECTED

In a previous post (creating an effective morning routine) I talked about the importance of having an effective morning routine, but what happens when you have an incredible morning routine planned and suddenly something unexpected occurs?

MORNING ROUTINE INTERRUPTED

Do you put your regular morning routine on hold and just wing it for the next few mornings? Or do you just stop following your morning routine all together because you already missed a couple of mornings and you don’t know how to get back on track again? Should a morning routine be ruined and forgotten because the unplanned aka LIFE happens?

THE #1 REASON WHY PEOPLE GIVE UP ON ROUTINES

One of the reasons why people give up on routines is because they fail to complete their routines for x days. Many people get discouraged when they miss two or more days because instead of disregarding the days missed and continuing on with the routine, they give up on their routine all together. Why continue when I already ruined my routine?” Right? Have you ever been that  person? I have! Trust me, feeling discouraged or disappointed is not fun at all.

CREATING ALTERNATIVE MORNING ROUTINES

NOT GIVING UP ON ROUTINES

Unfortunately, life will always happen. Unplanned things will always happen. We won’t always be able to complete our routines as planned. So, at the end of the day what matters the most is not the ability to follow your routine perfectly everyday, but instead the ability to not give up on it when you do miss a day, for x reason.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BACKUP PLANS

Plan A may not always work and that is something we have to accept whether we like it or not. However, just because plan A doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean we should feel defeated or discouraged. If plan A doesn’t work, we should always have one or more back-up plans to fall on. If Plan A doesn’t work, we still have plan B, C, D, E, F and so on…..if we don’t, well now would be the time to create them.

STAYING ON TRACK WITH AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTINE

Don’t wait for the day where you need a back-up plan to create one. Create your back-up plans now.Take some time today to create a couple of alternative morning routines. Trust me, alternative routines will help you immensely. Not only will they help you stay on track, but they will also give you a break from your regular routine without having to slack. Prepare for the unexpected!

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR ALTERNATIVE ROUTINES:

MORNING ROUTINE WHEN:

  • You’re sick.
  • It’s the weekend.
  • Family and friends are staying over.
  • You’re traveling or on vacation.
  • You’re working vs not working.
  • It’s school time vs on break.
  • It’s holiday season.

This is a great post with many useful resources! I definitely agree; the biggest factor for me slipping out of my routines is feeling guilty about it after life happens, and I don’t get back into it easily. Thanks for sharing!

I love my morning routine. I make sure I’m not rigid in my routine but I also make sure I do things that make me feel energized and healthy throughout the day. I start off with 10 minutes of yoga, get ready, eat a healthy breakfast, spend a little time with my husband, and leave on time every morning for work

I need to start and have different routines to follow. I get so antsy when my current one is changed. It makes me feel really off for the rest of the day.

    Thanks for sharing this.
