DIY EMOJI BOOKMARKS BACKGROUND STORY

Before we get into the actual project, I would like to share a little background story pertaining to this DIY. But if you’re anxious to do the project, feel free to skip 🙂

Anyways, about two years ago, my five year old cousin came over to do some arts and crafts together. Unfortunately, I was lacking ideas and creativity that day. As you can imagine, it was pretty frustrating and let’s just say that she wasn’t making it easy either. So, we started looking up fun crafts projects on YouTube

MAKING EMOJI BOOKMARK CORNERS AT HOME

We looked through so many videos and none of them seemed to interest her until we came across a DIY to create emoji bookmark corners. This DIY automatically caught her attention and mine too (if I’m being honest!) Although she ended up making me do most of the work, we had so much fun. Once I made the first one, the rest were so easy to make. We made a whole bunch of emoji bookmark corners. I even ended up creating more to send them with every book order I received on eBay (ebay seller over here!)

MY OWN INTERPRETATION OF EMOJI BOOKMARK CORNERS

So, inspired by the DIY I watched two years ago (link below), I have brought my interpretation of this DIY Cute Emojii Bookmark Corners to my blog! And to spice things up, I chose to decorate my emoji bookmark corners in 5 different ways. I will explain everything, step by step, picture by picture, so get ready!

*DIY inspired by Red Ted Art on YouTube.*

SUPPLIES NEEDED TO CREATE EMOJI BOOKMARK CORNERS:

  • Construction Paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Something to create a circle with: Can, glass, protractor, or compass.
  • Markers
  • Felt Squares
  • Fabric Markers
  • Pens
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Mixed Media Paper

STEPS:

1. Choose the color of paper you want to use. I prefer using yellow paper because emojis are yellow!

2. Take the bottom corner of the paper and fold it into a triangle shape.

3. Cut the extra piece of paper on the top, leaving only the triangle.

4. Face your triangle this way.

5. Bring the bottom corner to the top corner (for both sides)

6. After folding both corners up, it should look like this afterwards.

7. Open up the triangle.

8. Fold the top flap down.

9. Add glue on both of the sides (triangles) NEXT to the flap.

10. Fold the sides (triangles) with glue inside the flap. Do it one at a time.

11.This is how it should look like after folding the triangles inside the flap.

12. Once the paper has dried, flip it over to the back to prepare for the next step.

13. Place the object that you will use to make a circle on top of your paper (on the side that we added glue)

14. Cut the entire circle EXCEPT for the two corners on the top. The corners are not meant to be circular.

15. If done properly, you should be able to have this opening in between the corners. Notice how the top corners are intact.

16. And…there you have it! Your bookmark corner is ready to be decorated.

BTW: If you want to create smaller bookmark corners take one construction paper, cut it in half and follow the same procedure above using only half of the paper. You can make two emoji bookmarks using ONE paper.

5 WAYS TO DECORATE EMOJI BOOKMARK CORNERS:

1. USING CONSTRUCTION PAPER

This is probably my favorite method.

Once you have decided the emoji you want to recreate, find construction paper that match the colors used in the emoji. Draw the shapes (eyes, brows, mouth, etc) on the pieces of construction paper. Cut the pieces out and glue them to your bookmark!

2. USING MARKERS

Once, you have chosen the emoji you want to recreate, take a marker (that matches the color of the emoji) and draw away! This method is simple and mess-free.

In this example, I chose to recreate a very simple emoji that only requires one color. So, if you choose one with more detail or colors, then it will be harder to recreate using only markers on top of colored construction paper.

I only recommend this method for emojis that only require one color.

3. USING FELT SQUARES + FABRIC MARKERS

Supplies needed: Tacky glue, felt squares, and fabric markers (if you don’t have certain felt square colors)

Once you have chosen the emoji, cut out the pieces that you will use for your emoji, outline the sides with a marker (unfortunately this smudges a bit) so that it stands out, add a few drops of tacky glue on it, and glue it on your bookmark.

This method is probably the messiest out of all. This method also requires supplies that you won’t really find at home, unless you are an artsy person like me, ha.

4. USING PENS

Definitely the easiest method.

Talk about simplicity, huh? All you need to do is find an emoji, grab a black pen and DRAW. There is no gluing involved – probably my favorite thing about this method.

5. USING ACRYLIC PAINT + MIXED MEDIA PAPER

If you’re feeling more adventurous, use mixed media paper to create your emoji bookmark corner and paint over it.

But, if you don’t have acrylic paper or mixed media paper, don’t try this method. I made the mistake of using computer paper and it was a total fail (judge yourself!) The paint wasn’t sticking properly and it was hard to blend the paint because of how delicate computer paper is. So, it was totally my fault for not thinking this one through.

However, apart from choosing the incorrect paper to paint on, this was probably my FAVORITE method. This method can honestly produce the most realistic looking emoji because you can create the exact colors you want with paint.

MY EXACT RESULTS

I wanted to keep it 100% real with you all, so I have shown you my exact results. These are not perfect emojis. They weren’t meant to be. The goal of this project is to just have fun while creating cute customized emoji bookmark corners that you can use!

Just look how cute they are! Perfect for decor, too.

I hope you guys enjoyed this DIY as much as I did! Let me know if you try it out.

Until next time,

GABBY
