Steps To Create A Morning Routine That Works For You

1. Plan What Time To Wake Up Everyday

No matter your role in life—whether you’re a student, a stay-at-home mom, an employee, or a business owner—the first step to building a productive morning routine is choosing a wake-up time that works for you. And no, we’re not going to go overboard—this is about progress, not perfection. It doesn’t matter if you’re up at 5 a.m. or 8 a.m., as long as it’s realistic and sustainable for your lifestyle.

Consistency is the real game-changer here.

Waking up at 5 a.m. for a few days only to revert to an 11 a.m. schedule defeats the purpose. Instead, pick a wake-up time that feels right for you and commit to it. If 8 a.m. works and you can stick with it daily, then let that be your start time. A consistent routine is the foundation of a productive day!

2. Figure Out How Much Time You Have

How much time do you have in the morning before your first major obligation?

If you’re a student, that might mean the time before your first class. If you’re a 9-to-5 employee, it’s the window before your shift begins. Or maybe you’re a stay-at-home parent or business owner—what does your “morning buffer” look like?

Is it an hour? Two? Three? Before you can craft an effective morning routine, you need to understand how much time you actually have to work with. This awareness is key because your routine should fit seamlessly into your schedule, not feel like a rushed afterthought. So, take a moment to assess your mornings and identify the time you can carve out for yourself. Let’s make every minute count!

3. Identify Your Priorities

Are your morning priorities health-related, hygiene-related, motivational, or work-focused?

Everyone’s needs are unique, so it’s essential to define what matters most to you.

Your priorities can be as simple as brushing your teeth or as ambitious as completing a workout. Think about the non-negotiables—those daily rituals that set you up for success. Is it stretching or meditating to start the day with calm? Journaling or reading something motivational to fuel your mindset? Or maybe it’s planning your tasks to tackle the day efficiently.

Take a moment to brainstorm. What are the things you consider must-haves in your routine? And what are some new habits you’d like to implement to make your mornings more meaningful? These priorities will be the foundation of a routine that works for you.

4. Create A List Of Your Priorities

After identifying your priorities, make a list! List all of the things that you would like to do every morning.

For example,

  • check emails
  • drink water
  • do a mask
  • read a book
  • go for a walk
  • workout
  • make a healthy breakfast

5. Distribute Your Time Wisely

Now that you’ve identified your priorities, it’s time to allocate your morning minutes wisely!

Using the time you have available (from Step 2), assign a specific amount of time to each task on your list. Be realistic about how long each activity takes—whether it’s 5 minutes to brush your teeth, 15 minutes for a shower, 20 minutes to eat breakfast, or 30 minutes to check emails.

Here’s how to break it down:

  1. List your tasks – Include everything from essential hygiene to bigger priorities like exercise, journaling, or planning your day.
  2. Estimate the time needed – Write down how many minutes each task typically takes you. Be honest and leave some buffer time if needed.
  3. Fit your tasks into your available time – Work backward from the moment you need to leave or start your first obligation, assigning each task a slot in your morning schedule.

6. Categorize Morning Tasks

Once your priorities and tasks are clearly outlined, it’s time to group them into categories to streamline your routine. Think of categories as buckets that organize similar tasks together, making your mornings more structured and efficient. If you’re using a printable (like mine!), you can label up to 6 categories—but feel free to adjust as needed.

Example Categories:

  1. Getting Ready
    • Brushing teeth
