What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is performance based marketing. Being an affiliate you get a commission when someone buys from your affiliate links. Sounds complicated? Let me break it down for you.

Being a blogger you have content on your blog. Now if you put affiliate links strategically into your blog post and your reader will end up buying from your affiliate links you’ll get a commission. Don’t worry about the tracking. The affiliate program has the latest technology and it will track everything in the back-end for you.  I’ve been doing affiliate marketing since 2018 and It has helped me to monetize my blog from day one. According to Statisca, annual spending in affiliate marketing is projected to list $8.2 billion by 2022 in the US alone. You can get an idea of how BIG this industry is with growing potential.

How does affiliate marketing work

Being a blogger you have to join the affiliate networks/programs. After signing up with the affiliate network, you’ll get a dashboard. Where you can generate your unique affiliate links and track your sales and earning numbers. You need to copy and paste affiliate links into your blog post and you’re ready to make some revenue. When your reader clicks on the affiliate link, the affiliate cookie gets saved into her browser. This affiliate cookie helps to understand your sales credit. Now if she buys within a certain period of time you’ll get a commission.

How to start affiliate marketing legally

I believe you already have a blog. If not, you should start one FIRST.  For starting a blog you don’t need to be a coder. Just purchase a domain and hosting account and install WordPress.  Your blog gets live in a couple of minutes. Now you have a blog. The next step is to find the affiliate networks and join them. There are hundreds of affiliate networks that accept beginner bloggers.

Beginner friendly affiliate networks/programs you can join

  • Amazon associate: best suitable if you want to promote physical products
  • Clickbank: best suitable if you want to promote digital products
  • Jvzoo: best suitable if you want to promote digital products
  • eBay partner: best suitable if you want to promote physical products.

How To Monetize Your Blog Using Amazon Associates

I suggest you start with amazon associates FIRST.  Amazon has thousands of products in the catalog which you can promote through your blog. And who else doesn’t know about Amazon? From your cousin to your mom everyone shops on amazon. So it can boost your affiliate sales conversion which you really need in the initial days to keep up the momentum in your blogging journey.  To sign up with amazon go to amazon associates. Fill in the necessary details like your name, website URL, address, payment, and taxes information.

After that, you get access to the dashboard where you can track your earnings and create unique affiliate links.  You can copy and paste your unique affiliate links into your blog post. So when any sales happen from your link, the credits should go to you.  Amazon affiliate cookies can live for 24 hours from the first click.  It means, if a person clicked your affiliate link through your blog and visited the amazon product page, and purchased anything within 24 hours you should get a commission for it.  Anything! Yes, you read it right.

The best part about using amazon associates

Let’s say you promote lipsticks through your blog post. One of your readers clicked the link and made a decision to purchase it. But after scrolling, she also decided to grab a shampoo or sweatshirt or coffee or anything within 24 hours then that sales credit also goes to you. So your commission got increased. Isn’t it cool? You need to land your reader on Amazon and after that, if she purchases anything within 24 hours you get that sales credit, cheers. Now you must be wondering how I could promote amazon products through my blog?  Don’t worry, I’m here for your rescue.

Have you ever seen blog posts like…

7 Best skin care products for women.

9 Best cheap backpacks for traveling.

5 Best small dial watches for working women.

These blog posts are monetized by affiliate marketing.

The owner of the blog does her research by filtering out or trying by herself the BEST product in the category and makes a list of products and explains the benefits of the product. If a reader likes the product she will definitely go through affiliate links to check out the product and chances are more she will end up buying a product.

Have you purchased anything by reading a blog post?

You might have done this before without knowing it. If yes then that blog owner gets a commission for it. This is affiliate marketing. This is how it works. So you can also make a blog post around your niche and promote affiliate products through your blog posts.

How to properly disclose affiliate links

Now most important, if you’re an affiliate, you need to disclose it to your readers. It is known as affiliate disclosure. According to FTC guidelines you need to disclose that the links in your blog post are affiliate links to your readers. You could add a separate “disclosure” page on your website. The best practice is to put a small disclosure right back after your headlines. Gabby has put in the affiliate disclosure in this blog post after the headline. Get it?

How to find affiliate programs according to your niche

Amazon covers almost every physical product you need to promote on your blog.  But if you are looking for a specific product to promote according to your niche you can find it without banging your head. You could take the help of Google in this case. Head over to google. In the search bar enter “your niche” + “affiliate programs” and hit enter button.  You’ll get web pages related to your industry’s affiliate programs.

You can also find an affiliate opportunity manually. Visit the website where you buy products for yourself or you love to promote the product on your website. If that website has an “affiliate program” you should find it In the footer section. Simply fill the form and sign up from there. (never forget to read their guidelines first) I’d made a list of “113 best affiliate programs” e-book that pay high commission to beginners. You should download it for free from my blog here.

More Tips To Help You Monetize Your Blog From Day One

Promote only those products which you have used or you truly believe are beneficial for your blog readers. If you have personally used the product you can easily write about it but if you haven’t used it then you should read the reviews mentioned in the product section to understand the pros and cons of the product. Now while writing a product review must add pros as well cons. So your reader can trust you and come again to read your blog. Don’t just try to sell a worthless product to your audience for the sake of money. Yes! you will make money but you’ll lose the trust. And trust is the most important thing if you want to build a community through your blog.

I’d seen a couple of newbies promoting worthless products just because of the high commission. Don’t do that, it could be the biggest blogging mistake in your life. To make a decent income you need the traffic flow to your blog. You could use Pinterest to drive initial traffic and also focus on SEO for organic traffic.
