The 30 Best Habits For A Happy Life

The person I am today is not the same person I was a year ago. A year ago, I was unhappy, confused, and unhealthy to the point where I felt like I had no purpose in this world. It sounds horrible to say now, but I was tired of living the same “meaningless and sad” kind of day over and over again. However, instead of giving up on life, I decided to do something to change my life. I became obsessed with creating a happy life, adapting new habits, and taking care of my physical and mental well being. And after adopting new habits and making drastic changes in my life, I was able to create a life that I am now happy and satisfied with. Which is why, below I’m sharing the 30 best habits for a happy life (according to my personal opinion and experience)

EXPERIENCING CONSTANT SADNESS
Before I get into sharing the 30 habits that have helped me change my life around, I want to share a little bit about my experience with depression. Back in 2018, I spent most of my days feeling depressed, awfully sad (with and without reason), and exhausted. I clearly remember writing in a journal entry, “I feel as if sadness haunts me.” In that moment, it seemed like everything I would do would lead me to the same dark road of sadness. I felt like there was no escaping sadness.
CRYING TO GOD FOR HELP
So after dealing with constant sadness for over a year, it came down to two options: give up on life or go to the only one who can truly help, God. Thankfully, I chose the right option. I started praying to God regarding my situation. Sometimes I would cry. Sometimes I would talk. But, regardless of what I was feeling, I decided to trust in God’s comfort, love, and restoration. One day I reached a point where I just couldn’t take it anymore and so I cried to God like I never had before. I opened my entire heart to him without sugar coating or leaving anything behind.
I told him I was exhausted, tired, hopeless, you name it. And I told him that although I was unworthy of receiving his comfort, he was the last bit of hope I had left. I knew that if he couldn’t help me, there wasn’t anyone else that could.
HOPE FROM GOD
As I was pouring my heart out crying to God, something strange but wonderful happened. While I was praying with my eyes closed, I envisioned my future. I envisioned a happy Gabby with a happy family living a happy life. That right there was the hope I was looking for all along. It’s as if God was trying to tell me that there was a future I had to fight for. He showed me that life was worth living and that he was going to give me strength to overcome all the sadness I was feeling. This is when I decided to fight for my life, my happiness, and my future.
CHANGING MY LIFE AROUND
The moment that God gave me a glimpse of hope, I decided to cling on to that and not let it fade away. So, I decided to completely change my lifestyle and take care of my health (something I never cared about doing before!) I realized that unless I would completely change my habits, adopt new ones, and eliminate toxic ones, I would continue to have the same results. And so I began to work on my physical, mental, and spiritual health like if my life depended on it and consequently my life changed for the better.
CREATING A HAPPY LIFE WITH HEALTHY HABITS
Because of what I have personally experienced, went through, and have lived during the last years, I can say that there is hope for the hopeless. It is possible to live a happy life, or at least a happier life. And it’s possible to overcome depression. I was able to. I’m not saying that I have been happy every single day since this moment. However, I can confidently say that I have been in a better place and in a healthier state of mind since. I am here today, writing this blog post to show you that it’s possible to change your life around. So, regardless of your current situation, I want to share 30 habits that have helped me turn my life around.
30 Best Habits For A Happy Life
HEALTH + SELF-CARE HABITS FOR A HAPPIER LIFE
1. HYDRATE
Not to sound cliche, but hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drink 2L of water everyday like if your life depended on it (it seriously does!) Water is essential for your mental & physical health.
2. REPLACE DRINKS WITH WATER
In the spirit of drinking lots of water a day, try replacing juice and soda with water for 90% of your meals! This will easily help you increase your water intake and reduce your sugar intake.
3. INTRODUCE CHIA SEEDS INTO YOUR LIFE
They’re versatile and easy to use in any recipe. You can even add chair seeds to your class of water and boom you’ll get a glass of water in and some chia seeds in your system.
4. DRINK A GLASS OF LEMON WATER
OK, last “water-related” habit, I promise! Aim to drink a glass of lemon water (with no sugar) at least 4x a week. Lemon is loaded in Vitamin-C – an antioxidant that helps your immune system.
5. SWITCH YOUR MILK
“If she’s not your mom, it’s not your milk!” Save the cows and your body from antibiotics and hormones. Switch from regular milk to almond milk. Almond milk is such a delicious alternative. I also love oat milk and cashew milk.
6. SAY HELLO TO ALMONDS AND GOODBYE TO ADVILS
Eat 10 almonds a day. Did you know that almonds can actually help you reduce headaches. Almonds are rich in antioxidants, protein, fiber, and all that good stuff. Click here to read how almonds have helped my physical health by reducing headaches.
7. EAT FRUITS DAILY
Try to eat at least one fruit a day. Apart from being so darn delicious (I’m obsessed with fruits) fruits are packed with nutrients!
8. DON’T SKIP YOUR MEALS
Speaking of eating, do NOT skip breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Be mindful of what you eat, but never starve yourself. Replace unhealthy foods with healthy foods.

9. TAKE YOUR VITAMINS
INVEST in your health because health is wealth baby! Drink your vitamins! Yes, I’m talking about your hair and skin vitamins as well as Vitamins C, E, A, K, Carotomax, etc. I personally love taking Shaklee’s vitamins and collagen supplements.
10. TRY OIL PULLING
A little oil pulling every morning never hurt nobody. Swish a tablespoon of oil in your mouth every morning to improve your oral hygiene. Oil pulling has many other great health benefits, too.
11. PRACTICE SKINCARE
Take care of your face, because it is the only one you will get. Practice skin care: exfoliate, cleanse, moisturize, pamper, etc!

12. GET STEPS IN
Get off your couch and walk! Walk for at least 20 minutes a day. If you need some walking inspo, check out my walk 3 minutes every hour walking challenge!
13. ENJOY NATURE
NATURE. SUNLIGHT. FRESH AIR. Take a moment of your day to enjoy what nature has to offer. Even if it’s just a 5 minute walk in your backyard or a walk to your mailbox. Hey, anything is better than nothing.
14. STRETCH YOUR BODY
Have a 10 minute stretching session everyday. Stretching not only improves flexibility, but it calms your mind and protects your muscles from injuries.
15. GET A WORKOUT IN, FREQUENTLY
Aim to workout 45 minutes a day, 5 times a week. You can choose to exercise at the comfort of your home at the gym, or anywhere that you find best fitting. If you’re a fitness newbie, check out the fitness section of my blog for fitness content.

19. BE GRATEFUL
Gratitude is the beginning of a life worth living! (: Take a moment during the day to write down some of the things that you’re grateful for. Sometimes we forget how lucky we really are!
20. ACKNOWLEDGE EVERYTHING YOU DO
Make checklists to plan and cross off your daily tasks. You can either create a to-do list every morning and check off your tasks as you complete them or create an “accomplished” list every night of all the things that you did during the day.
21. PLAN, PLAN, PLAN….
Use planners to help you stay organized, on track and ahead of the game!
22. APPRECIATE THE ENVIRONMENT YOU’RE IN
Maintain the space you live in neat and clean! From making your bed every morning, to picking up after yourself during the day, to tidying up everything on the weekends, to deep cleaning your home/apartment every once in awhile! 🙂
PERSONAL HABITS FOR A HAPPIER LIFE
23. PRACTICE JOURNALING
Release your thoughts, feelings, emotions, dreams, and goals on paper. “Journaling is not a commonplace habit, it is a keystone habit. Keystone habits affect how you work, eat, play, live, spend, and communicate.” –Thomas Oppong Attempt to journal at least 4 times a week or try out my journaling a phrase a day challenge!
24. FEED YOUR MIND
Learn something new.
You can either learn a new language, practice a new hobby, research a topic you’re interested in (fitness, in my case), etc.
25. GET LOST IN BOOKS
Read books, knowledgeable textbooks, scripture (my personal favorite!), blogs, etc!
26. GET RID OF NEGATIVITY
Eliminate all that extra negativity from your life and replace it with something positive. Stop watching the news and start watching inspirational and motivational videos instead.
27. USE YOUR TIME WISELY
Reduce your screen time to the amount that is absolutely necessary (work purposes)! Take ocassional breaks, social media detoxes from time to time and make the best of your “phone” time by using it more for work and growth purposes rather than entertainment purposes.
28. SCHEDULE TIME FOR YOURSELF
Have some “me” time. Treat yourself to a nice meal, a good face mask, a fun glam session, or a good book! Simply do what makes YOU happy, for YOU. (:
29. SMILE MORE
This is a hard, but life-changing habit. Smile (even if you don’t feel like smiling!) Trick your mind into thinking that you’re happy. This ironically seems to work.
30. BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
And the best and most important habit of all- cherish, treasure, and nurture your relationship with God. This is the most important relationship you will ever have – so make it work! Speak to God through prayer and listen to his words by reading scripture.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I wholeheartedly encourage you to take some of these habits and begin practicing them. At the end of the day, you have nothing to lose. All the time invested in yourself is time well invested. If you continue repeating the same habits, you will continue to get the same results. So, adopt new healthy habits, say goodbye to bad habits & repeat. And remember: if your present is not worth fighting for, your future is!

Honestly, I was nodding my head reading through this entire post – both with your personal journey and your recommendations for how to living a happier life. I think it is very inspiring for you to share your journey of personal growth and recommendations to help others change their lives.
Gratitude journalling and stretching/exercising are two of the most helpful techniques that I’ve found to help change my mindset. Also, starting my day in prayer really just sets the tone for my entire day. <3
Hope you are enjoying your trip!!! 🙂
Thank you so much! I’m so glad that my journey can help others, too. Yes, I wouldn’t be able to live without journaling & exercising haha. I need to start praying in the mornings. I usually pray in the evenings.
Thank you! I am, even though I haven’t been able to work much on my blog (I miss it lol!)

Love this!! I’m trying to drink more water but it’s so HARD to keep track of how much I drank in a day… I know I’m drinking way too little for a day, I think I need one of those big bottles that tell you how much you should be drinking at 11am and then 12 pm and then 1pm LOL. Almonds are soo good, I love it when they’re like dusted with cocoa 😉 As for positive affirmations I’m trying to incorporate that into my bujo that I’m making right now! I’m sure it will be helpful to see it as I’m dying being at school again. Thanks for sharing Gabby!

Yes, big bottles with labels help so much! Ever since I have been using a 2L bottle, I have been consistently drinking 1.5L-2L a day. I need to try almonds with cocoa. Yum.
