Ultimate List Of Bible Study Must-Haves

ultimate list of bible study must-haves

While studying the Bible may come easy to some people, it can be quite intimidating, challenging, and “boring” to others. Personally, I wasn’t always passionate about Bible study. I’ve always appreciated reading the Bible, but that’s about it. So, it has taken me a few years to genuinely enjoy studying the Bible. Since Bible study is typically portrayed as a religious and boring activity (it’s really not) that Christians have to partake in, many people don’t even give it a chance. However, after spending some time discovering fun and effective ways to study the Bible, I have finally learned to enjoy Bible study. Which is why I have created the ultimate list of Bible study must-haves to help you study the Bible in a more fun way!

The Ultimate List Of Bible Study Must-Haves

1. THE RIGHT BIBLE

First things first, you need to get yourself a good bible. What I mean by this is get yourself a bible that will actually make you want to study it. I’d recommend purchasing a Bible Study Bible rather than a regular bible. Regular bibles are great for church and daily readings, but not for intense studies. So, if you truly want to make the best out of your bible study time, invest in a bible that will make your bible studying experience more fun and effective. I personally love my ESV Interleaved Journaling Bible (click here to learn about it)

If you’re wondering what version you should read in, I recommend using the KJV or the NKJV version!

2. RESEARCH TOOLS

The Bible can be a very complex book. So if you really want to dig deep, you will need your phone, computer or tablet to do your research. I love using technology to search up words I don’t know, the background of some biblical characters, history, etc.

Bible Study Tools is a very helpful website that I love to use! It includes a parallel bible (to compare verses in different translations), concordances, dictionaries, many bible studies, commentaries, audio bibles, reading plans, and so much more helpful tools! Plus, you can search up any word in the bible and all verses containing that word will show up. How amazing, right?

3. CHRISTIAN BOOKS

Books are very useful during Bible studies. However, the amount of books you should have can vary. I personally own a few christian books (I definitely need to stock up on more), but the two books that I find the most useful when it comes to bible studying are the following:

Who made God? By: Ravi Zacharias and Norman Geisler

This book includes the answers to over 100 really tough faith questions, like “who made God?” or “how can a good God send people to hell?” If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions you should definitely purchase this book!

Know your Bible

This book gives you a brief but informative overview of every single book in the Bible including: the author, date of writing, a description, a detailed summary, unique aspects, key verses and a “so what” application of each book.

4. A PLACE TO WRITE IN: JOURNAL OR PAPER

Is it even possible to read your Bible without jotting things down?

NOT FOR ME. I have an unhealthy amount of journals and notebooks around my house that are solely dedicated to my bible studies. It’s honestly impossible to study without writing. So you definitely need some sort of book or paper to write in for your bible studies! Here are some options:

  • Journals
  • Notebooks
  • Note pads
  • Diaries
  • Looseleaf paper
  • Index cards
  • Post-its

5. WRITING TOOLS

In order to write, you need ” writing utensils”, right? So, definitely consider stocking up on your writing utensils. Don’t hold back. Trust me, you will enjoy writing more if you have cute pens, markers and pencils. The more, the merrier (: (: (:  Here are some writing utensils to stock up on:

COLORED PENS

I swear by my Pilot G-207 pens! They come in 10 different colors. I have yet to find pens that last longer or write better than these!

DUAL BRUSH PENS

These are so great if you love creating art work for your studies!

The dual feature is incredible because one side serves as a marker and the other side as a pen.

SHARPIES

Sharpies are so good for bold titles and headings! The black ones are my fave!

PENCILS

I don’t use pencils much, but they’re always good to have around!

6. HIGHLIGHTING + UNDERLING TOOLS

I don’t really understand people who don’t write on their Bibles. Like, how?

How can you read a soul-touching verse and NOT highlight or underline it? Does reading (or studying) your bible even count if you don’t personally engage with it? I personally love writing directly on my bibles. Here are my top 3 favorite writing utensils to use on my Bibles:

HIGHLIGHTERS

Highlighters are great for highlighting KEY words and titles!

However, I avoid highlighting entire verses in my Bible because highlighters usually bleed through the paper!

COLORED PENCILS

I love coloring lightly over verses because it helps me separate themes and characters from each other.

I prefer to highlight with colored pencils rather than highlighters. Plus there are more color options!

GEL PENS

The Pilot G-207 pens are great for writing but not for writing on your actual Bible (they’re too strong)

Gel pens are my favorite kind of pens to underline verses and circle words with.

7. TABS

I recently got into creating tabs for my Bible and I’m OBSESSED. Tabs are such a great way to keep track of important moments, characters, and words in the Bible. They’re so easy to create, too!

You just need paper, colored pencils (if you don’t want your background to be white), a ruler, clear tape (to laminate your tab) and a marker! I definetly recommend creating tabs if you want to memorize scripture and moments in scripture! It’s so fun! 8. BOOKMARKS

I don’t know about you guys, but when I read the Bible I can’t just stay in one place. Since I love reading all over the place, bookmarks are a must for me. I need bookmarks to help me keep track of where I’m at in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. So, if you’re like me, you can either purchase cute bookmarks for your Bible or create them yourselves! (click here to learn how to create your own christian-based bookmarks for your Bible!)

9. STATIONERY TOOLS

You guys, an effective Bible Study experience calls for all the stationary supplies mentioned below.

The more goodies you have, the better your study sesh’ will be.

Here are some of my favorite stationery tools:

  • Sticky notes: Sticky notes are for quick or last minute thoughts and notes. You can stick them on your bible, notebooks – literally anything!
  • Note pads: Notepads are great for side notes, definitions, and to create tabs as well. I love laminating these colorful sheets with clear tape!
  • Index cards: Index cards are great to study a topic, bible verse, or biblical character in depth. Colored index cards are the way to go. But white ones are fine too.
  • Paper clips: Paper clips are great to to help you keep papers and index cards organized.

10. STORAGE

Finally, you need to have a place where you can keep ALL of your bible study essentials. Give your bible study supplies a HOME inside of your home. Makes sense?

BINDER OR FOLDER

Definitely get yourself a binder or a folder to store all of the papers that you use when studying your Bible.

DRAWER OR SHELF

You can either neatly place all of your Bible study essentials inside of a drawer or on a shelf. That is up to you.

BAG

I recommend having a bag for your Bible study essentials that way you can easily carry your supplies around, if needed.
